REPORT: Zendaya's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" Character Revealed

By Albert Ching

It looks like Zendaya's role in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" may have been revealed, after months of speculation. The 19-year-old Disney Channel veteran will play the key role of Mary Jane Watson, according to a report published Thursday afternoon by The Wrap, citing "two individuals with knowledge of the project."

As further evidence to the role, The Wrap reports that "one recent draft of the script has Zendaya’s character dropping several clues to her identity as Mary Jane." Zendaya was originally announced as playing a character named Michelle when first reported as part of the film back in March, but it's certainly not unheard of for studios to engage in some intentional misdirection -- and, it's important to note, her specific role has not been officially confirmed by Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios or Zendaya herself.

Mary Jane Watson was first introduced in 1966's "Amazing Spider-Man" #42, as part of Stan Lee and John Romita's famed run on the series. In Marvel Comics, Mary Jane is Spider-Man/Peter Parker's most well-known and longest-running love interest; the characters were married in the comic books for around 20 years, before their marriage was dissolved in the controversial "One More Day" storyline. Kirsten Dunst played the role in three live-action films between 2002 and 2007.

Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland in the title role, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is scheduled for release on July 7, 2017. Keep reading CBR for the latest.
