BRIGADIER JERRY - Warn Dem - Gwan a School

BRIGADIER JERRY - Warn Dem - Gwan a School
Brigadier Jerry emerged in the late 1970’s as one of the most popular cultural DJ’s to regularly improvise over the Jamaican sound systems. Highly respected as a conscious DJ, Briggy was called the teacher. He taught Rasta culture to the people. Despite early dancehall's taste for slackness, Jerry's subject matter was spiritual and cultural, though he did have a sense of humor. His chanting over the mic was a form of preaching musical sermons. While with Jah Love, bootleg cassette recordings of his live performances began to circulate among DJ aficionados and reggae lovers worldwide resulting in packed houses wherever he played. Briggy developed a strong underground reputation with his talented melodic toasting style. In the years to come, other DJ’s were to follow his example, but Brigadier Jerry will always stand predominant as the general - the man who set the standard. His vibe and lyrics have an Old Testament...

MARVEL’S INHUMANS COMING TO IMAX, ABC IN FALL 2017

MARVEL’S INHUMANS COMING TO IMAX, ABC IN FALL 2017
by  Anthony Couto   Forget about that “Inhumans” movie as part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — Marvel has instead announced a TV series spotlighting the property that will debut in September 2017 on IMAX screens, before moving to the small screen on ABC, the home of Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”   According to Marvel.com, “Inhumans” will exclusively show its first two episodes on IMAX screens for a two-week window — the first-time a live-action TV series has done so. The series will subsequently air on ABC with “additional exclusive content that can only be seen on the network.”     Created in 1965 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Inhumans are a race of super-humans with “diverse and singularly unique powers,” as described in the official announcement. The group of heroes have recently seen a higher profile at Marvel on the comics page and on the...

SPECULATION INCREASES AROUND A POTENTIAL DISNEY/NETFLIX ACQUISITION

SPECULATION INCREASES AROUND A POTENTIAL DISNEY/NETFLIX ACQUISITION
by  Albert Ching   Disney has made multiple high-profile purchases in recent years, and there’s increased speculation that Netflix may be next on the company’s shopping list. The potential purchase gained increased attention following a  TechCrunch  article published on Sunday, which laid out the potential benefits for both parties. TechCrunch cited “rumors swirling,” linking back to a  Fortune  article from October, which itself cited “whispers” that the media conglomerate was considering an acquisition of the mega-popular streaming service. So while it’s safe to file this solely in the rumors and speculation category for now — both parties declined comment late last month in a  Los Angeles Times  article — there appear to be many reasons why a deal would make sense. As TechCrunch detailed, despite Netflix’s success, it faces escalating costs to fund its growing slate of original programming — making it a likely candidate for acquisition from Disney or a...

No Sleep NYC Nightlife Flyers 1988-1999 By DJ Stretch Armstrong and Evan Auerbach Introduction by Mark Ronson Pre-Order Available Now   No Sleep  is a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth,  No Sleep  features a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios, and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops, and were not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the advent of the internet, the flyer essentially disappeared, despite it being common at one time for promoters to print thousands...

U-ROY - PERFORMED ON REGGAE ON THE RIVER

U-ROY - PERFORMED ON REGGAE ON THE RIVER
Known as the Originator, U-Roy wasn't the first DJ, nor even the first to cut a record, but he was the first to shake the nation and he originated a style so distinctly unique that he single-handedly changed his homeland's music scene forever. Born Ewart Beckford in Jones Town, Jamaica, in 1942, he received his famous moniker from a young family member unable to correctly pronounce Ewart and the nickname stuck. U-Roy is well known worldwide and he consistently plays many of the major festivals. He tours Europe regularly. In the US U-Roy has been performing with the Fully Fullwood band. They backed him on this year on Reggae on the River under the name Soul Syndicate. His was one of the top performances of the festival. U-Roy's rise to fame was slow, and took almost a decade. He began back in 1961, DJing at the Doctor Dickie's Dynamite sound system....

AT&T IN TALKS TO BUY WARNER BROS. AND DC PARENT TIME WARNER

AT&T IN TALKS TO BUY WARNER BROS. AND DC PARENT TIME WARNER
by  Kevin Melrose in  Comic News ,  Movie News     AT&T is reportedly in advanced talks to purchase Time Warner, the media conglomerate that owns Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Bloomberg, which broke the news on Thursday, now reports  discussions have accelerated  in hopes of reaching an agreement by Monday to close the door on other possible buyers, such as Apple or Google. The potential merger is already being compared to Comcast’s 2011 purchase of NBCUniversal, in terms of combining content and distribution. A telecommunications giant, the Dallas-based AT&T bought DirecTV last year for $50 billion, becoming the nation’s largest pay-TV service. A deal, which would have to meet with the approval of federal regulators, would give AT&T control of not only DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ film, television and interactive units, but also Hanna-Barbera Productions and cable networks like HBO, CNN and Cartoon Network. EARTH KRY BAND - 9 to 5 - Hard Road

EARTH KRY BAND - 9 to 5 - Hard Road
The EarthKry band was born and nurtured within the halls of the Edna Manley College of The Visual & Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica where four budding musicians hoped to hone their skills. Their journey began in 2012 with a twist of fate which brought together lead singer and guitarist Aldayne Haughton, keyboard player Phillip Mcfarlane , drummer Kieron Cunningham and bass guitarist Kamardo Blake to play a series of small gigs. Drawing inspiration from Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Beatles, John Holt, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse and others the group soon cemented a wholesome fusion of Roots Reggae, Soul and Rock for a fresh but universal sound. Much like the iconic reggae outfit The Wailers, the band chose its name, EarthKry, to signify its mission to voice the grievances of the downtrodden through the vibrations of their music. Befittingly, their debut single “9 to 5” echoes the daily tribulations...

24-Track Collector's Edition Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Jamaican Rock Steady Genre

24-Track Collector's Edition Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the
Jamaican Rock Steady Genre
2016 marks the 50th anniversary for Jamaica's celebrated musical genre rock steady. Rock steady, which was a successor of ska and precursor to reggae, used elements of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz, ska as well as African and Latin American drumming. With its irresistible slow tempo beat and more bass-heavy, stripped-down sound, it was a distinct contrast from the more upbeat, big band ska era. Although it lasted only a couple of years (1966-68), rock steady is one of Jamaican music's most influential genres and produced immortal rhythms that are still sampled and used today.   17 North Parade,  VP Records' vintage imprint, commemorates the genre this year with  First Class Rock Steady.  The 12" double vinyl edition is available  this Fri. (Sept 30)  and   follows its 40-track CD and digital companion box set  (released on  July 1 ) as well as the 7" limited edition vinyl piece exclusive for Record Store Day 2016.   This new collection of First Class Rock Steady is completely...
