Earlier this month, the Atlanta Black Star reported that black-owned businesses were still growing but not as fast as other business subcategories. Based on newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau, black Americans make up 12 percent of the nation’s population. But concerning ownership of businesses two years old or younger, they make up just 3.3 percent of the group. Back in 2014, the headlines were less ominous. Several publications celebrated the fact that more than two million U.S. businesses were black-owned. But in the nation’s biggest cities (with the greatest concentration of wealth), black businesses account for less than 10 percent of companies.
